Folk Tunes for Two Kavals

cover of Authentic Tunes for Kaval

"Folk Tunes for Two Kavals is a newly released anthology by Kiril Belezhkov, comprising 14 pieces. Drawing on a broad stylistic palette—including ornamentation, authenticity, and harmonic interplay between the two instruments—the author presents both lyrical and dance melodies from various Bulgarian folk regions: Thrace, Shopluk, the Northern region, the Rhodopes, Srednogorie, and Pirin. To support interpretation and performance, the collection also includes methodological notes on ornamentation and techniques that help convey the artistic intent." (from the introduction by Nikolay Doktorov)

The book, a pdf available only by download, is accompanied by 75 audio files, with each tune played by Kiril in up to 6 ways: the Kaval 1 part, the Kaval 2 part, both Kavals 1 and 2, and, for metered songs, all three versions with a metronome, for study purposes. The download includes both mp3s and m4as at the highest bitrate.

The parts in each piece are notated, and include Kiril's ornaments and techniques. He explains and illustrates the ornaments and techniques in Bulgarian and English.
